Schedule: This position includes regular domestic and international travel and may be required to work beyond office hours and occasional evenings and weekends, as required by seasonal business needs and position requirements

Summary of the position:

The IES Abroad Tokyo Center Director is responsible for strategy, academic and program development/management, student affairs, administrative and accounting functions, outreach, public relations, marketing, crisis management, customized programming, university relations with partner institutions, and human resources for the IES Abroad Tokyo Center. The Center Director supervises the Center's academic programs, serves as the main point of contact with the Center's partner institutions in Tokyo, and they cultivate a broad range of contacts for the benefit of the Center and IES Abroad. The Center Director is the main point of contact for the Center with IES Abroad headquarters in Chicago and works in close collaboration with the Program Dean to whom the Center Director reports. The Center Director hires and supervises all staff and faculty members for the Tokyo Center, and is responsible for the health and safety of the Center's students. The Center Director also represents IES Abroad and the IES Abroad Tokyo Center at IES Abroad meetings, on visits to colleges and universities in the United States, in meetings of professional organizations, and at conferences. The IES Abroad Tokyo Center Director collaborates closely with other IES Abroad Center Directors, especially those at the IES Abroad Nagoya Center

The IES Abroad Center Director combines strong academic credentials with demonstrated experience in administration and management. The Center Director should be familiar with the nature, organization, and customs of higher education in both the United States and Japan, should have experience working in education in both countries, and should demonstrate skill at collaborating with Japanese and U.S. institutions. The Center Director should have a strong commitment to academic rigor, to educating post-secondary students in an international environment, and to promoting intercultural competence. Native or near-native fluency in English and in Japanese, both written and spoken, is required.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Graduate degree in a relevant academic discipline (humanities, social science, etc); doctoral degree strongly preferred
  • 5 10 years of progressively responsible managerial experience
  • Relevant management experience in study abroad programs and prior contact with U.S. university students greatly preferred
  • Previous experience living and working in Japan is required; Tokyo preferred
  • Demonstrated experience in administration and management with strong academic credentials in a recognized academic discipline
  • Familiar and experienced working with the nature, organization, and customs of higher education in both the U.S. and Japan, and demonstrate skill at collaborating with Japanese and U.S. institutions
  • Teaching experience at the university level in a subject related to Japan greatly preferred
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to work well with students from U.S. colleges and universities
  • Native or near-native fluency in both written and spoken Japanese and English required
  • Excellent administrative, organizational, and problem solving abilities
  • Excellent team-building skills
  • Experience in the development and management of complex budgets; not-for-profit budget management experience desirable
  • Strong commitment to international education, intercultural issues, and a strong interest in student affairs preferred
  • Interest in the academic and intercultural growth of university students
  • Student-centered philosophy and sensitivity to issues of diversity
  • Must be able to lawfully accept employment in Japan at the time an offer of employment is extended
  • Ability to travel to other regions of Japan and to the U.S. on occasion
  • Background check required
