Summary of position:

A member of the Marketing Department, the Writer is an integral part of the writing and development of all marketing-related content. The Writer is skilled at developing copy for a range of media (print, web) and audiences with the goal of sharing the organization's mission, and promoting studying and interning abroad.  This person also manages IES Abroad's extensive student correspondent/blogger program.

 
Essential job responsibilities & duties:

  • Write, format, and publish news stories on IESabroad.org, while implementing SEO strategy to create important, useful, and relevant content
  • Oversee the IES Abroad correspondent/blogger program, including soliciting and managing 100+ student correspondents per year
  • Support the writing, editing, and/or creation of a range of external communications for IES Abroad, such as coordinating, formatting, and disseminating monthly e-mail newsletter to partner universities (What's New)
  • Write content for IES Abroad country catalogs and specialized publications (i.e. brochures, flyers, advertisements, newsletter, agendas, etc.)
  • Collaborate with the digital marketing and graphic designers to curate compelling content that gets noticed. In this role as a storyteller, you will collaborate with the design team for integration of photography, graphics and video.
  • Participate as the Marketing representative in interdepartmental program development teams, managing the marketing and catalog content for those programs
  • Help identify opportunities for digital marketing and PR efforts highlighting editorial, product and brand stories. Assist with content marketing initiatives to gain editorial placement through press, blogger outreach and strategic alliances. Collaborate with the digital marketing team's SEO / SEM members to increase search relevancy; help conduct keyword research and optimize content.
  • Assist with developing new and existing program marketing campaigns
  • Collaborate across departments to help develop and maintain consistency of message across IES Abroad communications
  • Support public relations efforts by brainstorming, researching, and developing pitch story ideas, writing press releases, and monitoring relevant media as needed
  • Help monitor, analyze and report on customer, content and competitive insights to recommend content topics and outreach opportunities.
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Regular and predictable attendance is an essential function of this position

Experience & Qualifications/Skills:

  • 1-3 years of experience writing, editing, and developing targeted marketing/communication collateral
  • Proven exceptional writing and editing skills with an adaptable written voice
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Systems
  • Familiarity with website Content Management Systems
  • Excellent organizational and project management skills
  • Exceptional attention to detail and creative problem solving skills
  • Self-motivated with time management skills and the ability to multi-task
  • Adobe Suite knowledge a plus
  • SEO experience is preferred
  • Experience working with/managing writers is a plus
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with a fast-paced marketing team and others
  • Ability to think outside the box
  • Ability to write toward multiple target audiences
  • Web design and content development experience a plus
  • Blogging experience a plus
  • Good sense of humor

Education Licenses and/or Certifications etc.:

  • Bachelor's degree in Journalism, English, Public Relations, Marketing, Communications or related field.

Physical demands:

  • Ability to remain in a seated position for the majority of the day (between 70% -100% of work time)
  • Ability to work for extended and continuous periods at a workstation operating a computer, phone and other office equipment i.e., a calculator, copier, printer etc. (between 70% -100% of work time)
  • Need to occasionally move about inside the office to access file cabinets from 10% to 15% of work time
  • Ability to lift or move supplies, equipment, boxes, documents and materials weighing up to 40lbs from 10% to 15% of work time
  • Must be able to communicate via phone, email and in-person with employees, students, IES Abroad colleagues and third party vendors for the majority of the day (between 70% -100% of work time)

Working conditions/Environment:

  • As an exempt position, you may be required to work beyond office hours as defined by the needs of the department and/or organization
  • Due to the work environment, this workspace may experience varying noise levels. The workspace is well lit but with no direct natural light
  • Must be able to work in office on a daily basis

 
Fiscal responsibilities:

  • May be responsible for purchases via company credit card and ability to process expense reports in a timely and accurate manner
